Erin's Law
What is Erin’s Law?
In 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed Erin’s Law (SB 856) to help protect children from sexual abuse. This law requires all public schools in Oregon to teach students how to recognize, prevent, and report abuse in ways that are appropriate for their age.
The goal is to give students the tools they need to stay safe.
- Safety lessons each year: Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will have at least four lessons each school year about staying safe and preventing abuse.
- Part of health and safety education: These lessons are included in your child’s regular health and safety curriculum and follow Oregon’s state education standards.
- Age-appropriate and empowering: The instruction is designed to match your child’s stage of development. It focuses on teaching safety in a positive and supportive way.
- Respectful and inclusive: The materials and lessons are designed to be respectful and inclusive of all students.
- Staff training: Teachers and school staff receive training so they can support students and respond to concerns appropriately.
If you have questions or would like more information about the program or materials, please reach out to your school. We’re here to support student safety.
